UK Lotto
Lottery Overview & Statistics
UK Lotto (officially The National Lottery Lotto) is the UK's flagship lottery product, operated by Allwyn Entertainment under a licence from the Gambling Commission. First drawn in 1994, it transitioned to a 6/59 matrix in 2015, producing a jackpot probability of 1:45,057,474, significantly better odds than US or pan-European alternatives.
The jackpot starts at GBP 2 million with a Must Be Won rule: if no jackpot winner is found after five consecutive rollovers, the jackpot must be won in the next draw, even if no ticket matches all six numbers. In that event, the prize is shared among the next highest winning tier.
UK Lotto draws are dedicated to charitable causes by statute, with a proportion of every ticket sale contributing to the National Lottery Good Causes fund. Over GBP 46 billion has been distributed to arts, sports, heritage, health, and charity projects since the lottery launched.
Game Format & Rules
Players select six numbers from a pool of 1 to 59. A Bonus Ball is drawn from the remaining 53 balls after the main draw and applies exclusively to the second prize tier (five main numbers matched plus the Bonus Ball). The Bonus Ball does not affect any other prize tier.
A jackpot win requires matching all six main numbers. The probability is 1:45,057,474. The Bonus Ball creates a seventh effective number for second prize determination only, without altering the main draw mechanics.
Standard entry costs GBP 2 per line. Lucky Dip provides a computer-generated random selection. Players may also use the Lotto HotPicks variant, which offers different fixed-prize tiers for matching fewer numbers.
Prize Structure & Odds Analysis
UK Lotto features six prize tiers. Tier 1 (jackpot, six main numbers) has odds of 1:45,057,474. Tier 2 (five main + Bonus Ball) has odds of 1:7,509,579. Tier 3 (five main numbers) has odds of 1:144,415 and a fixed prize of GBP 1,750. Tier 6 (two main numbers) pays a free Lucky Dip ticket.
Prize fund allocation is approximately 45% of ticket sales revenue. The jackpot is not fixed at a minimum beyond the GBP 2 million starting point; it accumulates through rollover revenue. Under Must Be Won rules, rollover funds are distributed to the next highest winning tier if no Tier 1 winner is found.
Total prize payouts since 1994 across all tiers exceed GBP 80 billion. Prize amounts for Tiers 1 through 4 are pari-mutuel, varying with ticket sales and winner counts in each draw.
Draw Schedule & Deadlines
UK Lotto draws are conducted every Wednesday and Saturday at approximately 19:45 GMT (20:45 BST during British Summer Time). Ticket sales close at 19:30 on draw days. Results are transmitted to National Lottery retail terminals and digital platforms immediately following the draw.
Online and app-based purchases are supported on the National Lottery website (national-lottery.co.uk) and via authorised online lottery platforms for international players. Players outside the UK can participate via licensed third-party operators.
Players can set up direct debit subscriptions to enter every draw automatically, and can purchase advance entries covering multiple draws per transaction.
Cryptocurrency Ticket Purchases
Access to UK Lotto via cryptocurrency requires use of authorised third-party online lottery platforms, as the National Lottery's direct platform does not support crypto deposits. These platforms accept BTC, ETH, and other major cryptocurrencies, converting deposits to GBP-equivalent value for ticket purchases.
Blockchain deposits offer international players a payment mechanism that is unaffected by UK gambling-related card transaction blocks, which affect many non-UK-issued cards and some UK cards due to issuer-level restrictions.
Withdrawals are available in supported cryptocurrencies at market conversion rates. Players should note that UK Lotto prizes are denominated in GBP, and crypto withdrawal values will reflect the GBP/crypto exchange rate at the time of the request.
