Powerball
Lottery Overview & Statistics
Powerball is a multi-state American lottery administered by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), currently sold in 45 US states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. First launched in 1992, it operates on a 5/69 + 1/26 matrix with a jackpot probability of exactly 1:292,201,338.
The jackpot minimum starts at USD 20 million and accumulates through rollovers, with no statutory cap. This uncapped structure has produced the world's largest individual lottery jackpot on record: USD 2.04 billion, awarded on 4 November 2022 in California. The jackpot is offered as either a lump-sum cash option or a 30-payment annuity over 29 years.
Powerball drawings occur in Tallahassee, Florida, under independent auditing. Total prize payouts since inception exceed USD 100 billion across all tiers, making it one of the highest-paying lottery programmes in history.
Game Format & Rules
Players select five white ball numbers from a pool of 1 to 69, plus one Powerball number from a separate pool of 1 to 26. The two drums are drawn independently. A jackpot requires matching all five white balls plus the Powerball. Matching only the Powerball (no white balls) wins the minimum prize of USD 4.
The Power Play multiplier option is available for an additional USD 1 per play, multiplying non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x (the 10x is only available when the jackpot is below USD 150 million). Match 5 without the Powerball is always multiplied to USD 2 million with Power Play active.
Quick Pick random selection is available via terminal or online interface. Players may submit up to five lines per ticket transaction. Each combination is statistically independent, with no partial state shared between plays.
Prize Structure & Odds Analysis
Powerball has nine prize tiers. Tier 1 (jackpot) requires five white balls plus the Powerball, with odds of 1:292,201,338. Tier 2 (five white balls, no Powerball) carries a fixed prize of USD 1,000,000 with odds of 1:11,688,054. The Powerball alone (Tier 9) pays USD 4 with odds of 1:38.
The overall probability of winning any prize across all nine tiers is approximately 1:24.87. Prize pool allocations are structured so that 50% of ticket revenue is directed to prizes. Tax withholding applies at the federal and state level for US residents, with non-residents subject to applicable treaty rates.
Jackpot winners may choose between a lump-sum cash option (approximately 60% of the advertised jackpot) or a 30-payment annuity schedule. The annuity provides 29 annual payments, each 5% larger than the previous, totalling the advertised jackpot amount before tax.
Draw Schedule & Deadlines
Powerball draws are conducted every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 22:59 ET (03:59 UTC the following day). Ticket sales cut-off times vary by state jurisdiction, generally falling between one and two hours before the draw time.
Draws are conducted in Tallahassee, Florida, using two drawing machines and two sets of balls. Independent auditors oversee each draw. Results are transmitted electronically to all retail and online sales systems immediately upon draw completion.
Online ticket platforms provide results within minutes of each draw. Players can elect to receive email or push notification of draw results and can review complete draw history via their account dashboard.
Cryptocurrency Ticket Purchases
Cryptocurrency-based ticket purchases for Powerball operate through a fund-then-play model, where digital assets are converted to USD-equivalent value at the point of deposit. Players are issued tickets at the standard USD ticket price following successful deposit settlement.
For international players, crypto deposits bypass the restrictions associated with US-based ACH and card transaction processing, which frequently decline cross-border gambling transactions. Supported assets typically include BTC, ETH, USDT, and other major currencies.
Prize withdrawals requested in cryptocurrency are processed at prevailing market rates. Given the USD-denominated nature of Powerball prizes, players should factor in exchange rate variability between prize confirmation and withdrawal execution.
