La Primitiva
Lottery Overview & Statistics
La Primitiva is one of the oldest lottery games in the world, with origins in 18th-century Spain. In its modern form, operated by Sociedad Estatal Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE), it uses a 6/49 main draw plus a Reintegro (single digit 0-9), with an additional Complementario ball drawn after the main six. Jackpot probability is 1:139,838,160.
The Reintegro is unique to Spanish lotteries: it is a single digit printed on every ticket, and if your Reintegro matches the drawn digit, you receive a refund of your ticket cost, entirely independent of your main number match. This effectively gives every player a 1 in 10 chance of at least breaking even.
La Primitiva draws are held every Thursday and Saturday, and the game is one of Spain's most popular lottery products alongside El Gordo de la Primitiva and the Spanish Christmas Lottery (Lotería de Navidad).
Game Format & Rules
Players select six main numbers from a pool of 1 to 49. After the main draw, a Complementario ball is drawn from the remaining 43 numbers; this applies to the second prize tier only (five main numbers matched plus the Complementario). The Reintegro is a pre-printed digit (0-9) on each ticket, drawn separately to determine ticket cost refunds.
Jackpot probability for matching all six main numbers is 1:13,983,816 for the main six. However, the standard La Primitiva jackpot pool also aggregates across consecutive draws, and the overall probability quoted (1:139,838,160) may refer to specific jackpot tier configurations. Players should verify tier definitions with SELAE documentation.
Each play costs EUR 1. Online purchases are available via loteriasyapuestas.es for Spanish residents and through authorised international platforms for non-Spanish players.
Prize Structure & Odds Analysis
La Primitiva features multiple prize categories. Category 1 (six main numbers) jackpot probability is 1:13,983,816. Category 2 (five main + Complementario) odds are 1:2,330,636. Category 3 (five main numbers) odds are 1:54,201. Lower categories extend to matching three main numbers.
The Reintegro (matching ticket digit to draw digit) has a fixed probability of 1:10 and refunds the EUR 1 ticket cost. It is statistically independent of all other categories and applies to all tickets regardless of main draw outcome.
Prize pools are funded by a percentage of ticket revenue, with pari-mutuel distribution for the top categories. The jackpot rolls over when no Category 1 winner is found, subject to SELAE's standard rollover and jackpot accumulation rules.
Draw Schedule & Deadlines
La Primitiva draws are conducted every Thursday and Saturday. The draw commences at approximately 21:30 CET (20:30 UTC). Ticket sales close approximately 60 minutes before the draw. Online sales via loteriasyapuestas.es close at an equivalent time.
Results are published on the SELAE website and via official lottery retailer networks immediately following each draw. The Reintegro result is announced as part of the main draw broadcast.
Advance multi-draw purchases are supported, allowing players to lock in entries for both weekly draws or multiple weeks ahead in a single transaction.
Cryptocurrency Ticket Purchases
La Primitiva ticket purchases via cryptocurrency are processed through authorised international online lottery platforms, as SELAE's direct platform (loteriasyapuestas.es) is restricted to Spanish residents. These platforms accept BTC, ETH, and other digital assets, converting deposits to EUR-equivalent value for ticket purchases.
Non-Spanish players benefit from crypto's cross-border payment functionality, bypassing common restrictions on online gambling transactions from non-Spanish bank cards. Deposits are settled near-instantly for ETH and stablecoin transactions.
Prize withdrawals in cryptocurrency are available at prevailing EUR/crypto conversion rates. The EUR-denominated prize structure means players should consider exchange rate exposure between prize confirmation and withdrawal.
