EuroMillions
Lottery Overview & Statistics
EuroMillions operates under a transnational lottery structure administered by a consortium of nine European national lottery operators, first launched in February 2004. The game uses a 5/50 + 2/12 matrix, producing a jackpot probability of exactly 1 in 139,838,160 per ticket.
The jackpot is subject to a rollover cap: once it reaches the legally mandated maximum ceiling (currently EUR 250 million), all prize money cascades into the next tier until a winner is found. This mechanic has produced some of the largest lottery payouts in recorded history.
Since inception, EuroMillions has paid out over EUR 90 billion in total prizes across all tiers. Participation spans Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, giving it a combined eligible population exceeding 270 million adults.
Game Format & Rules
Players select five main numbers from a pool of 1 to 50, and two Lucky Star numbers from a secondary pool of 1 to 12. All ten numbers must match the draw outcome for a jackpot win. The Lucky Stars are drawn from a separate drum, making them statistically independent of the main draw.
Ticket purchases are processed up to the cut-off time prior to each draw, which typically falls approximately 90 minutes before the draw commences. The draw itself is conducted live under independent auditing, with results transmitted simultaneously to all participating countries.
A single ticket covers one combination. System entries allow players to cover multiple combinations on one transaction, increasing coverage at a proportionally higher cost. Each additional combination is priced at the same rate as a standard entry.
Prize Structure & Odds Analysis
EuroMillions features thirteen prize tiers. The jackpot (Tier 1) requires matching all five main numbers plus both Lucky Stars, with odds of 1:139,838,160. Tier 2 (five main + one Lucky Star) carries odds of 1:6,991,908 and a fixed prize of approximately EUR 500,000 unless the jackpot rollover event applies.
Lower tiers extend down to matching two main numbers (Tier 13), with odds of approximately 1:22 and a fixed prize of EUR 4.30. The overall probability of winning any prize is approximately 1 in 13. Prize fund allocations are distributed as a percentage of ticket revenue across all tiers.
A Millionaire Maker or equivalent promotion is attached to EuroMillions in certain participating countries, guaranteeing at least one EUR 1,000,000 prize per draw independent of the main jackpot matrix. This effectively adds a parallel prize tier funded separately from the main prize pool.
Draw Schedule & Deadlines
EuroMillions draws are conducted every Tuesday and Friday at approximately 21:00 CET (20:00 UTC in winter, 19:00 UTC in summer). Ticket sales close approximately 90 minutes before each draw, meaning the cut-off falls around 19:30 CET on draw days.
Results are published immediately following the draw via official lottery operator websites, and are simultaneously transmitted to authorised online retailers and third-party result aggregators. Players can verify their tickets against published results within minutes of the draw closing.
Advance ticket purchases covering multiple consecutive draws are available, allowing players to lock in entries for up to 10 draws ahead without requiring individual transactions.
Cryptocurrency Ticket Purchases
Cryptocurrency ticket purchases for EuroMillions are processed via a digital wallet settlement layer, converting BTC, ETH, or other supported assets to the denominated ticket price at the point of transaction. This eliminates currency conversion friction for non-euro-based players.
Blockchain-based payments provide an immutable transaction record, giving players cryptographic proof of purchase independent of third-party payment processor records. Settlement times vary by asset: BTC transactions typically confirm within one to six blocks, while ETH and stablecoins settle faster.
Winnings can be requested for withdrawal in supported cryptocurrencies, with conversion rates applied at the time of withdrawal request. Players should be aware that cryptocurrency valuations are subject to market volatility between ticket purchase and prize withdrawal.
